Christmas traditions will this year be mostly the twelve days of Christmas

It’s been a tiring week. Edward has been poorly for what seems like forever and would probably be better by now except that he seems to have picked up another virus – probably from our visit to the doctor’s office earlier in the week – and so I have had yet another sleepless week as I deal with sickly, puking-their-guts-up, feverish, coughing-their-guts-up children. On Wednesday night I was up a record nineteen times and I don’t think I actually slept at all past 10.30pm. Coffee and adrenalin, that’s what I’m surviving on.

Christmas shopping? Um, I tried that online until the baby puked on my laptop.

Because they are now at school, the children have performed their first nativity play. With the cast being made up of 4-7 year olds it was heavy on songs and light on action and dialogue and let’s just say it wasn’t a play you would have wanted to watch unless your own children were in it. With my own children in it, it was, of course, wonderful. Two perfect angels!

Every year I endeavour to add a new Christmas or Advent tradition to our regular traditions which include visiting Father Christmas, nightly Advent readings by candlelight, watching The Polar Express and making various crafty things (even though I loathe crafty things) in addition to the usual Christmas decorations, pre-Christmas kiddies parties and Christmas day activities. This year though I haven’t had the time or energy to think of anything so in order not to look like the worst mother ever we will be doing something exciting over the twelve days of Christmas. Because that’s after Christmas and therefore I have bought myself some time. Now must just think of some low-key traditions – gifts/activities/outings – for each of the twelve days.

Harry’s birthday is on the twelfth day of Christmas so it always brings Christmas to a nice conclusion as we take down the decorations and put up his birthday ones.  Because I’m not allowed to sigh a big sigh of relief that the gaudy (aka children’s) decorations can come down because there are equally gaudy birthday ones to put up! But at least I can ‘file’ all the Christmas decorations that the children made. In the bin.
