It was not a good week:
- it rained pretty much every day – what happened to summer?
- William picked up another vomiting and diarrhoea bug, the third in as many weeks. He’s not even in school so I’ve no idea where he’s getting them from. Oh yes:
- William must stop sucking his fingers. I must have explained the link between his habit of sucking his fingers and picking up bugs until I
want to ram his fingers down his throatam blue in the face. - because he was sick, the television was on near-constantly. The other children have watched a lifetime’s amount of television in a week.
- because the TV was on, I had to come up with some really amazing activities to draw the other three away. That kind of mothering is really hard work.
- because we couldn’t go anywhere I could have at least relied on the other children spending some time (read energy) in the garden, but see point 1. above.
It was also a good week though:
- when I have to be, I’m really good at this mothering thing (see point 5 above). We made cookies, baked cakes, glued pasta pictures, did sponge painting, made pinatas, made finger puppets, planted herbs, did science experiments, did school work (in the holidays!), wrote stories, made a racetrack, cleaned all our toys, mended all our broken toys and made a birthday present. Yeah, I want to shoot me too.
- I even entered into long discussions about Star Wars and dressed up as Princess Leia. I think I deserve a mothering medal for that. (Can I start me a new blog bling badge passing out mothering medals, STARTING WITH ME?)
- the weather turned better, William recovered and we made it out to the local Country Park for a great picnic and play day out. Even better, I didn’t have to climb up any play equipment this year and rescue any bawling, stuck or frightened children from the top of scary slides.
- the weather stayed good and we went to our village fete where all my children wandered round holding hands, looking like perfect, sweet children. That mothering medal is looking more like mine the more I write really.
- I found a forgotten bottle of gin in the back of the drinks cupboard and a bottle of tonic which was just about to expire. It was a sign that I should have several gin and tonics this evening before it goes out of date. Y’all know how much I hate waste.
- Tomorrow we are off to a supercar show (you know, the type where they have only the fast, expensive, glamorous cars) and therefore I will, in my sons’ eyes, be the best mother ever. And then I can spin them the spiel about how they have to work hard in school if they want to buy a car like that when they’re older. See? I’m fun and educational.

Definitely medal-worthy. In fact, a nobel-prize would not be out of order, I think.
Yep, you definitely deserve a medal.
Oh you’re definitely a good mother! Arts and crafts and Star Wars role play and cleaning up after a sick boy all in the same week? I’m impressed.
Oh, thank you all! Should I prepare some sort of acceptance speech do you think?
